Because people keep asking me:
The basis for this thing was a nighttime-screenshot from the start of Winter Wrap Up, which i pretty much traced in Illustrator and recolored, with every "level" of the picture in its own group - which added up to a good couple hundred different layers and about 3 days total work. I then grouped those together and imported them into Photoshop, in a dozen different groups (for instance, the bed is 5 layers - backrest, pillow, blanket, wood in front and Twilight) - that way, i could use clipping masks for the shading without disturbing the other objects in the picture. Much more comfortable than drawing the lighting on the whole picture in one go.
As for the shading, that's basically just me drawing the individual layers in dark blue/red, then brushing away the "shadow" in the areas that should be lit. The rest was playing around with transparency and stuff like that.
Here's the picture without any effects:
And here's the shitty first version with light:

Originality Technique ImpactI love this new piece. I congratulate you on another great piece of art work! most people would think this an effortless picture due to the fact that it was made from a previously, professionaly, expert created image. I think them wrong. you clearly spent a lot of time making this and the method you detailed in the description shows this. also, the DOF is superb for a 2-dimensional image about 2-dimensional characters. what stands out most is the lighting. sleek, smooth and natural light makes this an an excellent example of good talent. 10/10 and a favorite from me!
