Alright. I'm reasonably sure this one is finished - first picture of the next four-picture series "Ponyville at varying Times during the day" or some crappy title like that. Like the marketscenes, those will presumably double as loading screens for MLPonline, but unlike the marketscenes, this time i planned ahead and made them widescreen. 1920x1080 times two, to be exact - Wallpapers, HO!
A short step-by-step montage is over here, in case someone's interested.:
Dawn: Noon: Dusk:
[edit] I made the highlights on the roofs a bit darker and changed the color of the streetlantern, as per the nice suggestion in the critique below. I think that works out quite nice.
I love this picture, because it's beautiful, due to the wonderfully starry night sky. The moon is bright and gorgeous, the lights are pretty shiny and Owloysious is sitting on a tip of the fountain LOL!!
The shading is incredibly realistic, Pinkie Pie's party cannon is catchy, Twilight Sparkle (with Spike sleeping on her back) is kinda sweet and the houses are just cosy as well. These two (or three) are walking straight into bed after chilling out in the party.
The night sky with stars reminds me of the one I saw while stargazing. It is just beautiful as it should be
You've done a really nice piece here. I just have a couple of things to mention that could be improved.
Shading and Shadows:
Using black to shade with makes things look a bit muddy. Try dark shades of contrasting color. For instance, a dark purple to shade the yellow of the thatched roofs. MLP will almost never use pure black even in night scenes.
The more distant houses should be darker than the ones in the foreground. Doing this will give the piece more of a feeling of depth. (Lightening the colors as objects get further away does the same thing in daylight.)
Lighting:
The lamp being a pure white makes it seem a bit stark. A warmer, more inviting light would be more in keeping with the spirit of MLP. (See the garden lamps in the episode Sweet and Elite for an example.) Also, a warmer color would make a better contrast with the moonlight.
While the moon is a general (softer) light source, the lamp is a point source and should cast shadows with much harder edges.
Lighting is a very powerful tool but can be extremely complex in a sweeping piece like this one. (I haven't even mentioned bounce lighting.)
Conclusion:
With all that said, it's a very nice piece which hints at a story behind it and certainly evokes a mood in the viewer. You've got a good start on mood lighting. The way you've composed the lights is very nice. Keep up the good work!
Would make a great level design for a video game version of this! Like Zelda Majora's mask or Pokemon diamond and pearl, maybe this game could use real time! and those pics can be inspirations! Not really happening, but it's a nice idea!!!
